Muhhamad Salim, figure that well known as the head chief of Diponggo Village welcoming us as our journey to explore this place. In the middle of his time at evening, he taking his time for have a few words about his own village. Salim, as also the other people there, is retired from voyage journey which has turning him to success before. Aside from that, he’s father also the former of head chief in this place that last for 3 periods before himself. The awareness for the culture as he belief turns out as his strongest identity, it also carried him to going back into Diponggo.
Having this position from 2008, Salim having a big dream for this village that has taken care of him from the beginning. It is not necessary a grandiose thing, he is hoping for his culture to be lasted and back into its former purpose for this place. Salim, who also a former of head chief son feel that there is still a lot of ambiguous from this village, starting from language, culture, history, until it reached the mindset of people.
Different from another village in Bawean Island, Diponggo Village is using Jawean language, quoted from Surabaya Post articles in 20th August 2020. Jawean interpreted as Java Bawean which has smoothly used by Salim. Aside from fluent uses of Jawean language, he also teaching this language in Madrasah Tsanawiyah Diponggo which start operating in 2017. “While teaching, I also still learning for it, if there’s a doubt for doing the wrong phrase, this language will never be survived” as he said while using Jawean language ngoko (non formal). With his 7 students, Salim and 4 another teacher there is pushing for a changes “That until now, education in Diponggo is stopping at elementary level only, it also causing the extinguished of language and local cuture” Salim says in his durung(i.e. gazebo name in Diponggo).
Salim said that this language is formed after the coming of Waliyah Zaenab, important figure in Diponggo and has known for her contribution as becoming influencer of Islamic religion. The approach of Waliyah Zaenab in history also not really clear, for a few people that believe in the story, she has live in this village because of her escape from her husband Sunan Giri, because she is about to have another wife with the daughter of Sunan Bungkul. But after it has been researched by Dr. Koeswandi, there is a fact that her motive is being motivated by her duty to bring influence and educating people about Islamic religion. This opinion has led to unclear history that also being proven by her family tree which turns out to be in Siti Jenar descent, which in past era has been searched for their conjecture in spreading misguided doctrine with Majapahit Kingdom.
Even it has been clarified by Dr. Koeswandi, people around the village still doesn’t fully belief about that matters. Moreover, Salim is still relentlessly cultivating the enthusiasm for the awareness of culture within people. Short after upon his return, crazy presumption has been stick in him, it based from his success in working abroad and his choice to become odd laborer in village. This matters doesn’t concern him even a little because the important things that he still be able to fulfill is be able to eat 3 times per day, he belief that his good charity will always become goodness for him and the others.
Salim who lived with his mom, his fourth wife, and 2 of his youngest children, living together in his house. His house also often become parking land nor haven for the pilgrims of Waliyah Zaenab because his house is placed near Waliyah Zaenab cementery. Even so, his permanent house with the collaboration of fresh color indicating the happiness which also represented in this family daily activities.
